Char aina armour plate
mid 17th century or later
An armour plate from a fine gold-damascened steel Char-aina (The four mirrors). This piece is a side plate with embossed decorations of interlocking palmettes and floral buds forming a quatrefoil in the centre. The borders show wavy scrolling tendril in koftgari gold. The surface shows obvious wear caused by the movement of the upper arm when walking but sill retains 80% of its gold. The centre of the plate shows some restored puncture holes. 540 grams.
- Similar examples are exhibited in the Stibbert Museum in Florence. - A full char-aina with the same characteristics was auctioned at Christie’s South Kensington, lot 262, April 2013.
