Chota Nagpur Phareti Axe

A battle ax or Pharetri commonly associated with the indigenous Khond peoples of the central, eastern and southern parts of India. Nagpur axes come in many designs, craftsmanship and condition. Our item is a rarer example attributed by G.C. Stone to the Kol people. A group of tribes called the 'Kol people' by the British and one of the many tribes on the Chota Nagpur plateau.

The ax shows very good craftsmanship and is in excellent condition. Beautifully executed geometric decorations on both bolster and ferrule. The triangular shaped steel blade is reinforced with a central rib, on a hardwood shaft and equipped with an iron ring.

Literature: George Cameron Stone, p. 156 image nr. 6 and 7, as Kol.
