Indian battle axe

Deccan, 19th century

Overall length
65 cm

Blade size
13,7 cm (crescent)

Materials
steel, iron, wood

Dating
Deccan India, probably 19th C.

Here we have a simple but very well made Indian battle axe or tabar commonly associated with the indigenous tribes of the central, eastern and southern parts of India. Our example differs from the more common tribal axes in its better craftsmanship and its strong resemblance to the typical crescent shape encountered on Persian and Ottoman axes.

The axe shows excellent craftsmanship and is in very good condition. It features beautifully executed geometry. The crescent shaped steel blade sits on a hardwood shaft and has an iron end cap on the top.
