A zaghnal axe
Here we have a 19th century Indian 'zaghnal' (war hammer / pick) , a piercing weapon also referred to as "crow's beak". It has a steel blade chiseled on both sides with flowers and elephants. The flowers' pistils in high-relief copper. The reverse of the blade exhibits a Shatri temple with a long central spike on top. The wooden handle has brass mountings and washers. Telling from its construction this example is not purely ceremonial. The axe's shaft is reinforced with a metal strip, held in place by four iron pins with brass washers. Length: 68 cm; Blade + shatri: Length: 23,5
